Dagatopi pattern for the final piece

I used the pattern from the previous pattern study. There was only 3/4 of the pattern drawn so I duplicated it and placed the copy on the oher side to make the pattern complete.
I copied and pasted the pattern until there was enough to fill the canvas.

I saved the image in an PNG format and transferred it to a Word document. I printed it out in colour and used PVA glue to stick it on to my final piece. I placed it on the dark pink traditional clothing worn by the girl.

Art Board

I used the emulsion and newspaper collage for the art board's background. This board will be for Nel Ten Wolde. The artist uses mixed media and lots of collage in their work therefore I thought using a collage as the background would reflect their art style. The emulsion also covers the newspaper text so my sentences can be visible on the board.

Final piece

Progression of my final piece.
I used a board as the surface for my piece. There was already some painting on it so I used emulsion to cover up the previous piece. The old work had used ink which started to show through the emulsion layer. I thought this was a good accident since one of my chosen artist, Minjae Lee, has bright yet soft colour in his background like in his work The Light of Mercy which had a soft yellow background with blurry spots of different colours.

With a pencil, I started sketching out the body.

I closed in on the face and put most of my focus on it.

I outlined the sketch with a mechanical pen in case the paint covers up the lines.

I mixed together deep red and white, which are both acrylic to create the pink colour which will be used for the guno cholo (traditional dress).
I used the pink as the base colour of the clothing.

I used deep red on top of the pink colour, this is meant to show the creases and shadow to make the clothes look more realistic.
Right now, the clothes look bland since there is no pattern. I will use the weaving pattern to create the patterns on the clothes and also on the face.
The ink stain on the face will be hard to cover since it keeps surfacing above the emulsion no matter how much I apply. I'm thinking of leaving the face with only pencil marking and collage.

Kurta pattern

I recreated the patterns found on the kurta using pencil and oil pastel.

The oil pastel wasn't the best option for creating such small details however from the distance the vibrant strokes look good.

With the photo print of the kurta, I practiced my weaving technique. I want to use the weaving method on my final piece so I need to repeated practice what type of patterns would suit the technique. It does not work well with this photo, the colours are too dark, the paper looks too full and it feels quite overbearing. The heavy colour won't match the light colour style of Minjae Lee's.

I tried it again with a photocopy of my piece, compared to the other one it looks much more lighter making it easier to link with Minjae Lee's style. However, the pattern is not very detailed up close, I need to add more details to the patterns.

Fonts for Art Board

A collection of font I could potential use for my art board. I want the font to reflect an informative approach but not too stiff, a relaxed pace but not too lazy.
Germania - quite thick and it seems too dramatic.
Lobster - I like this font but will it suit my theme?
Ariel - too simple, it'll be hard for it to stand out.
Bauhaus 93 - just like Germania, it feels too dramatic.
Baskerville - feels too formal and stiff.

Museum trip

I went to visit the local gallery with my friends. They were having exhibitions on World War artifacts, coastal sketches and portraits.

The statue at the centre of the Riversley park is a tribute to the fallen soldiers of the 2 world wars.

Photograph were not allowed inside the gallery, so I could only take a few secretly. The two above pictures are from an activity on the ground floor. There was a fossil under the paper and with the colour pastel, you had to rub it over the fossil to get an engraving of the fossil onto the black paper.

There were a few Gurkha objects displayed on the ground floor. This is the hat worn by Gurkha's during special military ceremonies, they aren't worn in combat nowadays.
Similar to the previous activity however this time, it is a figure of a nun from the medieval era.

There was a small selection of African art, this is a photo of an activity related to the section. The art pieces had to be placed in its correct order.
Graffiti on the fence near the lake in the park.
